On the bad side, narration feels rushed very often - from enemies to romantic cuddling in just a few sentences, the dying of alien Jeriba "Jerry" Shigan, and Davidge's investigation on Dracs' planet to search for Jeriba's child.
The alien Dracs are not that alien. The plot is not new and will never grow old: two people from strange cultures have to work together to survive - similarly found in Cherryh's Foreigner series or LeGuin's The Left Hand of Darkness but also in mainstream novels. The novella won Hugo in and Nebula in - to some extent because of Isaac Asimov's marketing strategy cf. I found both the movie version and the novella equally strong and can't say which one I'd prefer. Aug 29, Einar Nielsen rated it really liked it. I had heard that the story was much better and that the movie mangled it a bit plus there were production problems.
The story starts out great and has many great chapters that revolve around Davidge and Jerry or Davidge and Zammis as they are stranded on the planet. The text is good.
Enemy Mine – film review
You believe in the characters and the ever strengthenin just finished Barry Longyear's Enemy Mine. You believe in the characters and the ever strengthening relationships. If i could have had it my way I would have wished for more chapters on that. But as with the movie the novella has a weaker second half. Although all in all I was happy with the book and liked they way it ended. Jun 12, Sandi Layne rated it really liked it Shelves: science-fiction.
Didn't even know there was a book out there. The book is very different, but I found it highly enjoyable. The Irkmaan and the Drac are stranded on a planet alien to them both, but they forge a friendship trusty enough that Davidge the human is entrusted with the care of his friend's child. I was moved by the commitment Davidge displayed as well as the trust shown to him.
The end - well, I won't spoil it for you, but it made me smile. For a story of this length 90 pages in my book it told a story rich in lessons, in nuance, and in rough emotion.

Shelves: movie. Though you'd think there was more info in here than the movie, actually it feels like there was about the same, then a portion that was different, but the movie makes up for it with its own bits. I love the film, so it was great to read what prompted it. This was good. Jan 10, Jack rated it it was amazing. This book answered the question: could I get all teary over a bloke looking after an alien's child? Answer: yes.
Apr 09, Kevin Potter rated it really liked it. After being a huge fan of the film since I was a kid, I only recently realized there was a book. To start with, I'm actually a little surprised at how similar the film and the book are.
Happily, the book does go deeper into Drac society and culture, though there is a big less action. It naturally takes a little longer to get to it, but there is some brilliant charger building and After being a huge fan of the film since I was a kid, I only recently realized there was a book. It naturally takes a little longer to get to it, but there is some brilliant charger building and some incredible character moments. I'm not prepared to say the book is actually better than the film, owing in no small part to the much greater level of tension and action present in the film, but the book definitely offers some very different glimpses that radically alter the context of the film.
I felt that the end dragged on and did too much summarizing, but for all that, in some ways it ended up being stronger and more emotional than the ending presented in the film. In the end, I would definitely recommend this book to general science fiction fans s well as die hard fans of the film. Feb 12, 2Due rated it it was amazing. I happened to have watched the movie first, but I loved the book. It's really smooth and fast, yet never forgets to have intriguing details and amazing characters. I loved how much deeper the relationships are and how touching things can be.
Damn, it made me cry few times and so far it's been the only book to make me do so, haha. Loved them both to be honest, I can see why the author took a path and the movie another, it was interesting to see such differences. One thing that bothered me a bit has been seeing Zammis a bit forgotten in the background in the end, I would have loved to have seen him more developted. I'm not one who likes to read books which came to be movies, but this has been an exception and I'm glad I read it. Totally going to try more books from the author! This is a very short book and that is not surprising because the film wasn't that long either. This is a fun story about two enemy pilots who crash land on a planet after battling each other in the skies above it. At first they stay away from each other and even at one point try to kill one another before finally reaching a compromise and helping one another. Discovery of a mine filled with alien slaves and run by humans, leads to a revolution. Title has two meanings. Dec 07, Jenessa Gayheart rated it it was amazing.
I remember watching the movie years ago and fully enjoyed the process of lessons learned by the mutual enemies. I didn't remember the whole thing, though, and so this reading was delightfully surprising. I've always been charmed by the idea of being stranded on anything - an island, a planet, a mountain The element of relationship survival is another fascination, and this story covers that challenge I remember watching the movie years ago and fully enjoyed the process of lessons learned by the mutual enemies. The element of relationship survival is another fascination, and this story covers that challenge thoroughly too.
I was deep into the plot the whole time, wondering what would happen next, and felt satisfied at the end. It's a great read. When my step-dad put this book in my hand I was a bit skeptical. That said, in a way, I had handed this book to Joe to begin with. A month or so back, I mentioned a Wikipedia page that compiled a list of all the Hugo and Nebula award winning sci-fi books and suggest reading my way through it.
Joe beat me to the punch and as it turns out, this book was on that list. Long story short, the book is damn goo When my step-dad put this book in my hand I was a bit skeptical. Long story short, the book is damn good. I give bonus points for brevity. A lot of writers and readers feel the gravity of a story is a measure of its physical mass. Shorter may have been possible, but I never found the story to meander to far into the weeds.
I really enjoyed reading this as I am a fan of the film, and liked the insight the book gave on both characters from Davidage to the Drac he named Jerry and how they were first enemies to surviving together in the situation they were in. A great read for those who enjoy sci fi books and films and are a fan of this film. Sep 30, Kally rated it it was amazing Shelves: favorites. I read this book when I was young and it has stuck with me for years until I finally stumbled upon it in a thrift store in AK.
I was delighted to read it again, but worried that it would not live up to the hype I'd given it. I was so happy when it was everything I remembered and more! Feb 05, Leslie rated it it was amazing. I really, truly loved this book. The ending is more realistic than the movie ending and it made me happy.
