Shapiro in March of that year. It had been rebound in for its new owner by the famed bookbinders at Zaehnsdorfs, whose name is tooled in gilt inside of the front cover Figs. Though he could have kept such envelopes around for future use indefinitely, it is more likely that he used letters as he received them from his numerous correspondents. The notes on the slips bound into the volume are all in ink, as are some of the marginal notes, and are written in a careful hand.
Far more numerous are the penciled comments in a more casual hand, which are usually more tentative and shorter, as if he were making notes on matters that needed further research. The notes in pencil seem to be the notes and hunches of a working scholar, and the volume itself must have accompanied him to the Reading Room at the British Museum as he worked his way through various problems, as is evident from the references to British Library shelf numbers bound in the back of the book Fig.

Of the letters originally edited and published by John Donne the younger in the s, only two also survive in manuscript. While these two can be dated with some accuracy, the dates and places of many of the other letters can only be determined by reasoning from internal evidence.
