The Roland Dr. NOTE: The above are minimum requirements; most percussion students acquire more mallets and accessories during their years of study. In addition to the private lesson, percussion majors are required to attend Techniques Class, which normally meets once a week for one hour, usually on Wednesday evenings during the Fall and Spring semesters.
Participation in the Techniques Class is mandatory and an important phase of the percussionist's education.
During these sessions, problems concerning a wide variety of topics dealing with percussion pedagogy and performance techniques are discussed. Written or oral exams may be given over material presented in this class. Scheduling sufficient practice time and using it conscientiously and efficiently is the single most important requirement for success in a college music program. Percussion majors are asked to schedule at least one hour of practice time, Monday through Saturday, in the Music Building. A minimum of two hours per day is recommended for satisfactory improvement. The Instrumental Rehearsal Hall is also available for practice when there are no classes or rehearsals in that room.
Percussion majors are also strongly encouraged to enroll in the Marimba Choir Music All small "accessory" instruments MUST be returned to their proper drawer in the percussion cabinet after each rehearsal. All bongo and conga drums with calf skin heads should be loosened after each use. Instruments with wheels MUST be lifted over the thresholds between the doors this is especially true for keyboard instruments. The bass drum should be placed in the vertical position after each rehearsal. To do so, loosen the "T" adjustment handle before tilting and then gently tighten it again after turning the drum.
