It may even cure psoriasis. So do Lena Dunham and Alanis Morissette. Steven P. Jobs meditated, and mindfulness as a practice is sweeping through Silicon Valley. A week from Saturday, 2, technology executives and other seekers will gather for a sold-out conference called Wisdom 2. I first learned to meditate 25 years ago, built a daily practice in mindfulness and spent hundreds of hours sitting with my eyes closed and my legs crossed. Which is not to say I think it has no benefits at all. The simplest definition of meditation is learning to do one thing at a time.

It can leave you feeling hungry for the sensation of being away from it all, and you feel yourself unable to integrate the benefits of your retreat experience into every day life. Beeja meditation is only 20 minutes in the morning and evening and can be easily integrated into every day life. The power of the mantras to take you into a deep meditative state means that 15 to 20 minutes of practice is more than sufficient to give you all the benefit you require.

Beeja meditation is also a lot more comfortable. Sitting cross-legged with your back erect can feel tiring at the best of times, and especially so at the end of a long day. Being able to sit in your favourite chair and do it, or to be able to squeeze it in on the tube or train, is invaluable when life gets busy. And when your practice is comfortable and easy, and not too time constrained, it also means you enjoy it more and actually look forward to your meditation.

This is something we hear regularly and someone recently ended their review, with bestpartofmyday, which says it all. Another interesting dynamic that is worth considering is that Vipassana is a monastic practice designed for those living far away from the world. The Buddha himself abandoned his wife and kids to follow his path to enlightenment, and it seems very much that this was his calling in life.

I started practicing meditation earlier this year and it has so far exceeded my expectations. The simplest way to describe what happens when I meditate is by comparing it to turning a computer off and back on again. All the clutter and noise in my head stops and I become aware of some immediate changes within myself: I feel more alert yet more relaxed, I have a greater attention span and can start to appreciate my surroundings in an entirely different way.

The end result has been a much happier me. I would urge those with even the faintest curiosity about Beeja Meditation to pursue it. The process of learning is entirely culturally unchallenging — there is no singing, no lotus position and no religious agenda. You will not be asked to question your own beliefs but invited to learn from your own experience. I should also point out that this form of meditation is very different to other types of meditation I have been taught in the past such as mindfulness.

As a health care practitioner I am also interested in the objective benefits of practicing Beeja meditation.

I felt encouraged and warmly supported throughout — and I still do! Learning vedic meditation is one of the best things I have ever done. It has been the ultimate gift of kindness to myself because every day I know my life is becoming more enriched and joyful because of it.
