I have to agree with what you shared here. Happiness is a choice. Choose to be happy today! Happiness is most certainly not a choice! Perhaps superficial appearances of happiness are a choice, but trying to choose to be really, genuinely happy is usually about as effective as telling yourself, "Don't think about bananas". Were happiness a choice, the incorrigible Barney would be a veritable font of wisdom!
No, happiness is an ongoing process, the first step of which involves loving ourselves, seeing ourselves as uniquely valuable and worthwhile. Sadly, this does not come naturally to most people. It also flies in the face of the lessons the world tries to teach us on a daily basis.
Loving relationships can, and do, go a long way in counteracting these lessons. Many people look to relationships as a source of happiness because being loved by another is instrumental in learning to love ourselves. That's not to say that it's someone else's job to "make us happy", but a loving relationship, particularly a romantic one, can go a long way toward teaching us how to make ourselves happier.
